Saving the Skinks

Charles accompanied Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick to Wellington Zoo, where she made an important conservation management and research announcement concerning New Zealand’s Grand and Otago skinks.

Grand and Otago skinks are amongst New Zealand’s largest lizards, and are endangered. However, an important breakthrough in predator control has led to a strong recovery in a protected population of up to 94 per cent in just three years. At Macrae’s Conservation Area in Eastern Otago, two mammal-proof exclosures and 45 kilometres of traplines have been used to control a wide range of predators.

Pictured are Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick and Labour MP Charles Chauvel with one of the skinks, following a ceremony to mark the handover to Wellington Zoo of a small number of each species.
