Back Benches Television Appearance
A key topic this week was the rising cost of petrol and energy.
When asked whether New Zealand was facing a power crisis, Charles stated that although hydro-lake levels are at their worst levels since 1992, because the Government since 1999 invested in a lot more stand-by thermal generation, New Zealand is in a much better position to face the problem.
In response to the proposal that the government should cut taxes on petrol, Charles argued that in the long-run such a policy is not the answer. For there to be any meaningful difference to the price of petrol, the funds raised from taxing petrol should be used to improve transport options for New Zealanders
It is also necessary for people to change their behaviours. If more people were to use public transport or walk instead of driving, not only would this reduce the cost of travel, but it would also reduce the average carbon footprint, with significant environmental benefits.
When asked who pays for his petrol Charles was proud to say that he generally walks to work everyday.
Charles will next be appearing on Back Benches on 23 July 2008.
