Back Benches Television Appearance
Hosted by Wallace Chapman, the focus of the debate was on the budget. The other participants were Chester Borrows from the National Party, the Green’s Sue Kedgeley, and ACT Party leader Rodney Hide.
When asked about the 2008 budget, the ninth one delivered by Finance Minister Michael Cullen, Charles emphasised that although New Zealanders would receive tax cuts, what is truly important is having a budget that funds the things that really matter to kiwis such as healthcare and education.
This year’s budget certainly did this. In addition to the $10.6 billion tax cuts , other key budget announcements included an extra $3 billion to improve the health and well-being of New Zealanders, $182 million to invest in more teachers, $180 million for more police, and increased Working for Families Support. A boost to investment in New Zealand’s economy was also announced, with increased funding for infrastructure and industry as part of the Government’s economic transformation strategy.
Other debate topics included the rising cost of petrol and party leadership.
