Europe Day 2008

In May 1950 the first move was made towards the creation of what is now known as the European Union. On 9 May 2008 Europe Day was celebrated in all Member States of the EU.

Under the auspices of the Speaker of the House, the Honourable Margaret Wilson, the European Commission's Delegation to New Zealand and Members of the New Zealand House of Representatives celebrated Europe Day in the Grand Hall at Parliament.

As Chair of the New Zealand European Union Parliamentary Friendship Group, Charles coordinated occasion, which opened with a welcoming speech from The Speaker.

Ambassador Bruno Julien acknowledged the strong bonds of friendship that exists between the European Union and New Zealand; and Head of MFAT protocol, Warren Searell, replied on behalf of the Government.
