Orientation 2008

It’s orientation time again and, almost 20 years after he began his journey as a law student at Victoria University, Charles Chauvel returned to there as an MP to meet a new generation of tertiary students.

It was apparent from visiting the university’s Kelburn campus that student support for Labour is strong, reflecting the hard work that Labour has put into advancing the quality, accessibility, and affordability of tertiary education in New Zealand.

Under recent governments, improvements have been made to the student loan and allowance schemes, helping to ease the financial burdens of students at a time when making ends meet can be difficult.

Since 2000, $1.7 billion of interest has been written-off the student loan balance, including $531 million last year alone, demonstrating the impact of the 2006 policy to make student loans interest-free.
